The Early Years

Rául González is the top goal scorer in the history of UEFA Champions League football. The talented attacking midfielder began his football career at the age of 13 when he was recruited into the youth academy of Serie A club Atletico Madrid. He won his first major title within months of joining the club, winning the Spanish U-15 national title.

When the Atlético Madrid youth academy was dissolved by the club’s president in an attempt to save money, the young player was instantly signed by the Real Madrid youth academy. Rául won the national title for his age group again in his first year with the top Spanish club.

Professional Career

In October 1994 Rául was picked for the Real Madrid first team by Coach Jorge Valdano. At the time he was the youngest player ever to be fielded in a La Liga first team, playing his first game four months after his 17th birthday.

Rául won the La Liga title in his first season in the senior Real Madrid team, scoring nine goals. More La Liga titles were to follow as the gifted player helped Real Madrid win another four domestic championships between 1994 and 2007, scoring an incredible 193 goals in the process.

UEFA Champions League Football Legend

Rául’s exploits were not restricted to Spanish domestic club football. In 1998 Rául won his first UEFA Champion’s League title with Real Madrid, helping the club win Europe’s biggest prize for the first time since Madrid’s magnificent run in the late 1950s.

The UEFA Champion’s League win helped spark a massive revival at the club, and two more UEFA Champion’s League titles followed in 2000 and 2002. During this period Rául scored over 50 goals for his club, becoming the top scorer in UEFA Champions League history. With Rául only 30 years of age, and still at his peak, this record is likely to be stretched in coming years.

Rául González Playing Style

Rául is as modest and unassuming off the field as he is brilliant and flamboyant on it. The UEFA Champions League football legend is known for his trademark goal scoring celebration which sees him kiss his wedding ring in honour of his wife.

Rául’s playing style is almost technically perfect and he is a clinical finisher. The UEFA Champions League football legend’s class is indicated by his €190 million contractual buyout clause with Real Madrid and Chelsea’s record £70 million transfer proposal.
