Crucial ties for Liverpool and Arsenal
Fourteen teams are preparing for Champions League action as the third qualifying round of the tournament gets underway tonight.
Amongst the teams in action tonight will be Liverpool, who head to Belgium for a tough encounter with Standard Liege. Inspirational captain Steven Gerrard will only find out later today whether he is fit enough to play in the match.
Liverpool fans will be looking forward to seeing new signing Robbie Keane in action for the club. The 20 million Euro signing has yet to play a full competitive game for Liverpool, and with financing issues plaguing the club off the field, Keane will be under pressure to perform from the outset.
Also in action tonight will be Arsenal, who travel to Holland to take on Steve McClaren's FC Twente. While the match represents FC Twente's first ever appearance in the Champions League, McClaren's had stated that the side are under no pressure and has marked Arsenal as favourites to progress through to the next round of competition.
“Everyone I know in England is convinced that Arsenal will go through, so there is no pressure on our players," said McClaren. "We have to go into the match relaxed with the belief we can we win, but also enjoy it because it's Arsenal. It's the Champions League for the first time in the club's history so it is a momentous occasion."
