English clubs impress on opening night

Liverpool and Chelsea made winning starts to their respective Champions League campaigns on Tuesday night as both clubs scored victories over French opponents.

Chelsea managed a convincing win over Bordeaux in their Champions League opener, sending the French side crashing to a 4-0 defeat as four Chelsea players found the back of the net.

Liverpool, meanwhile, relied on a moment of brilliance from Steven Gerrard to level the score after Marseilles took an early lead in their Champions League opener. Gerrard then scored a penalty to win the match for Liverpool, completing a triumphant return from injury.

"It was amazing. It was a fantastic goal, it shows the quality he has," Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez said of Gerrard's score-equalling long range effort.

While English fans will be pleased with the way events unfolded on Tuesday night, CFR Cluj were the club that stole the limelight on the opening night of the Champions League, defeating AS Roma 2-0.

Both of Cluj's goals were scored by Argentinean midfielder Juan Culio in his Champions League debut.

In other matches on Tuesday night Inter Milan had no trouble shaking off the challenge of Panathinaikos as they romped home with a 2-0 win, while Barcelona breezed past Sporting Lisbon 3-1. Atletico Madrid made an impressive return to Champions League football as they handed out a 3-0 thrashing to PSV Eindhoven.
