Silvestre departs Old Trafford for Arsenal
Arsenal have made a surprise 11th hour signing, with Manchester United defender Mikael Silvestre set to leave Old Trafford for a new career at the Emirates Stadium.
Transfers between the two rivals are rare, and Silvestre becomes the first player in three decades to move from Manchester United to Arsenal. Silvestre is reported to have signed to a two year contract after being bought out of the remaining year of his United contract for an undisclosed fee.
“I've spent a large part of my career at United, the last nine years, and I'll remember that time fondly but feel I'm ready for a new challenge," Silvestre said on www.Arsenal.com.
"Arsenal is known for playing technical and skilful football and has a young but experienced squad,” Silvestre continued. “I'm really excited about this next stage of my career, hopefully playing my part in helping the club to new successes."
Silvestre had previously been linked with Manchester City, but is thought to have been converted to the Arsenal cause by the prospect of playing Champions League football under compatriot Arsene Wenger.
