Terry confirmed as England captain

Fabio Capello has named John Terry as the England captain for Thursday's world cup qualifier against the Czech Republic, with Terry expected to stay at England's helm for the duration of Capello's tenure as manager of the English national team.

Terry was chosen ahead of David Beckham, Steven Gerrard and Rio Ferdinand for the position of captain, based on trial runs in a series of international friendlies. Terry is no stranger to the English captaincy, having led England since Beckham resigned his post in 2006.

"I'd never given up on the armband and never will do," Terry commented after his selection as captain had been confirmed. "I'd heard the whispers Rio got the armband so I was a little bit shocked, but I've got to make the most of it. My target now is to qualify for the World Cup and that's the aim going forward."

Many fans had backed Rio Ferdinand to take the captain's armband, however Terry is said to have impressed Capello with his skill as a player as well as his 'big' personality. Capello went on to underline Ferdinand's importance to the English team.

"Rio, when he was captain, played very well - the same level as John," Capello said. "It was not easy for me to choose because they are very good players. The big personality of John was the reason I chose John, but Rio is very important to the team."
