Ronaldo named FIFPro Player of the Year
Portuguese striker Cristiano Ronaldo has been named the FIFPro World Player of the Year in a vote by over 50,000 professional footballers around the world.
Ronaldo received the award on Monday after the International Federation of Football Professionals voted him the player of the year for his sparkling contribution to Manchester United's successful Premier League and Champions League campaigns in the 2007/2008 season.
“To be recognised by my fellow professional players worldwide, coming from over 50,000 players, is amazing,” Ronaldo said upon receiving his award. “I would like to thank my team-mates and coaches and everyone involved at Man United and the national team, as well as my family and friends for their support.”
Cristiano Ronaldo scored a total of 42 goals during the course of the 2007/2008 season, with 31 of these coming in 32 Premier League matches.
Since receiving the award Ronaldo has put to rest persistant rumours that he intends to depart Manchester United at the end of the season, telling reporters: "I insist that I am a Manchester United player and now I think that next year I will continue here."
